Go-to handbook. The concepts will click even if you have never worked in such an environment before, and if you have it will make you see the past issues and possible solutions more clearly. Excellent book!
I would expect better quality for a book titled "The Process Improvement Handbook"This book had warped pages and poor binding. The book also had very poor graphics. Cheap constrution quality for a hard cover book.
Excellent breadth of process improvement methods and tools. Do not expect significant depth or explanation on each method or tool. Regardless, the templates are very useful!
Ok, full disclaimer: I am an agile person - eat, drink, sleep, and dream agile/lean. I crossed the bridge to agility in 2003 and since burned the bridge. So it was with ample skepticism but open mind that I undertook this nuts-and-bolts book, temporarily suspending my personal connotations of "process management".What I found intrigued and delighted me. When I stepped aside of my "ask the team" mindset, my "just sprint and all will be revealed to you" mantra, I realized that Boutros and Purdie have managed to not only neatly distill the ABCs of process improvement, but build an entire process ecosystem. Sure, some of the "labels" of things aren't maybe what I'd call them, but the notion of process improvement and process care-taking are necessities, and therein lies the meat of this book. The fact is that someone (or a bunch of someones) needs to usher and guide good process refinements, of course including the team and business stakeholders in that exercise. Forget the nuance of labels; rather, read this book with an attempt to understand the purpose, the bigger picture, the thing that matters.Too many companies fall short on reliable, sustainable processes, and end up doing their customers and teams a disservice. While it is impossible to mistake-proof a complex adaptive system we call a 'business' (which by nature of being a business, evolves a little each and every day), it is certainly valuable for process minded people to help the business solve every day issues, from big to small, building a system that in turn signals when there are problems. I agree when the authors say that "simply changing functional titles into process roles does not fundamentally change an organization's landscape or provide the organization with end-to-end view that employees can cooperatively manage and improve." This handbook can fill in those knowledge gaps as Boutros and Purdie provide a list of core competencies that a good process change leader should possess and instill in others.Boutros and Purdie discuss the Process Improvement Manifesto, of which one key facet is agility. They beautifully referenced the ever-evolving state of process: "Ever changing, adapting, and serving an individual and collective purpose, the ecosystem must have sufficient maintenance to remain in good health." Inspect and adapt.If you are at all involved with or interested in process improvement, I urge you to read this book and take from it what will improve your organization. Whether you're a smaller company trying to get your arms around the chaos, or a larger company trying to get back to small-company roots, this book does a great job of scaling the process improvement mindset with its focus on "process choreography" and the "process oriented architecture." It helps you see all the layers of process improvement and architecture. There's something for everyone in this book; use it for yourself, discuss topics with your team members, find ways to improve your organization's day-to-day processes and help everyone "see the whole". This book reiterated to me that a company can greatly benefit when everyone - not just management - harbors a continuous process improvement mindset and practices.

The book is divided nicely into 3 major components. The first, gives you the information you need to truly grasp process improvement while the second and third are great sections to keep as a reference as you start down the path of implementing change in your organization. One of the best parts of this book are the many templates and examples you can use in your own organization and the case studies do a great job of putting some reality behind the theories.Overall, a good book to have on your shelf, you will find yourself referring to it again and again.
